Toast Don Wood and the Huron High School volleyball team for winning the school's fifth state title Sunday night. Wood, a 1986 Norwalk High School graduate, has taken the Lady Tigers to the state tournament and has come back five times with the big trophy. He is a legend among high school volleyball coaches and we are proud to say he is one of ours. Roast the news that drug overdoses are increasing in Huron County. This has been a tough year for everybody and this news just makes it worse. We have a lot of work to do. Toast Wakeman police officer Steve Pozniak, who received the Ohio Fire Service Citizen's Award last week for rescuing a young girl from an apartment fire last January. Pozniak was off duty, working as a security guard at a Cleveland apartment complex on Jan. 26 when he heard screaming coming from a nearby townhouse. He discovered an 8-year-old girl leaning out of a third-floor window. Pozniak got on his security vehicle and coaxed the young girl to jump to safety. "He'd go above and beyond for anyone," Wakeman Police Chief Tim Hunker said. "I am not surprised he put himself in a position to help somebody. I am very proud of him." Toast the news the new 9-1-1 system in Huron County is going live in January. Voters approved a levy last November and the improved system should help everybody in a time of need. Toast Bongo, a 3-year-old wheaten terrier, who has the fastest recorded 100-yard dash for his breed. Bongo's owners, Peg and Scott Whitehurst, are proud of their pup and his accomplishments. Toast the story of Pleasant Elementary student Bobby Hovatter, one fine young patriot who goes out of his way to honor veterans. It is a story that makes us all very proud. Toast former Norwalk resident Conrad Allen, who came through town last week on his walk around Ohio with a simple message: Americans should stand up for what they believe and don't be shy about it. "I won't be muzzled," he said. Toast everybody at the Willard City Schools who got together for Veterans Day and honored all of the local vets in their community with signs in their front yards. Because of COVID-19, the annual gathering at the school was canceled, but it didn't stop the students and teachers. Congratulations on a job well done. Toast Monroeville resident Cindy Baican, who was honored recently by the Quilts of Valor organization for her years of service with the U.S. Army and Army National Guard. Baican was presented with a quilt in appreciation of her service. Toast the gentleman who helped Mary Anne Fletcher when she fell at CVS. Fletcher appreciated all he did.
