No charges filed against two Oregon officers involved in shooting

TOLEDO — A Lucas County grand jury declined to file any charges against two Oregon police officers on Thursday after a total of 21 shots were fired at a man's vehicle at the Kingston Court apartments, Police Chief Michael Navarre confirmed with The Blade on Thursday. A grand jury heard evidence in the shooting case of Victor Dale, Jr., on Thursday. Dale was shot as he attempted to leave in his vehicle when police approached him after getting a report of a domestic violence incident on June 13. Officers Joel Turner, 25, and Logan Nitkiewicz, 27, fired their weapons multiple times during the encounter, but they do not face any criminal charges for their actions, a grand jury determined. While officers worked to sort out an unrelated call at the same complex, Dale got into his SUV, locked the door, and started the engine. Officer Turner positions himself near the front left bumper, drawing his 9mm Glock 17, which Officer Nitkiewicz's camera shows is initially pointed toward the hood of Dale's vehicle as the car lurches forward. Officer Turner appears to shout for Dale to "stop" at least twice before the first pop of gunfire is heard, as the vehicle continues to move forward. More gunfire quickly follows and the vehicle speeds away through the parking lot. Both officers continued to fire at the vehicle. Bullets flew around the moving vehicle, striking fences surrounding apartment patios at the complex. Dale's vehicle stopped near the entrance of the apartment complex. He was ordered out of the car and he rolled onto the pavement. Dale was hit in the neck and the shoulder, and has since been released from a hospital.
