State-ranked Huron sweeps Edison

HURON — Huron looked like a volleyball team poised to make a deep tournament run Monday, easily sweeping Edison 25-17, 25-10, 25-15 in a Division III district semifinal. The talented Chargers came into the match with eight straight wins, their last loss coming against the No. 2-ranked Tigers. But the third meeting between the two Sandusky Bay Conference rivals wasn't close. Huron allowed only 42 points in three sets — 17 fewer than Edison managed in their match October 1. "We've played well the last three weeks," Edison coach Sean Hoover said. "We only lost two sets since the last time we played, but they're one of the elite teams. In my opinion, they're the best team in the state." The Tigers, who will host 19th-ranked Eastwood in a district final at 6 p.m. Wednesday, got 16 kills from Makenna Schafer, including five straight to end the match. Fellow senior Alizia Lagando added 13 kills and played a strong all-around match for the district's top seed. The Tigers (20-2) got 34 assists, six kills and four blocks from senior setter Georgi Moody, who earlier Monday was named the Most Outstanding Player in the SBC Bay Division. Cozzie added 26 digs and Claire Solberg helped the Tigers establish supremacy at the net with five kills and five blocks. Huron jumped out to an early lead in the first set before a couple Lilli Schuster kills and one from Kira Appeman cut the Tigers' lead to 16-13. The Tigers got kills from four different players down the stretch. Moody finished the set with a kill after a nice dig by Rae Roldan. Huron dominated the second set, building an 11-3 lead on a Sophie Lee block and two Moody kills. An 11-2 run gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead. "In the beginning of the match we were trying to be perfect instead of playing our game," Hoover said. "We just had too many errors to give them little runs. The great teams side out and don't let you go on runs. "Their serving affected us more today than the last time we played." Schuster finished with nine kills and 10 digs for fourth-seeded Edison (17-7). Appeman had eight kills and nine digs while Olivia Vitaz contributed 20 assists. An ace by Appeman gave Edison its first lead of the match at 2-1 in the third set. Another Appeman ace cut Huron's lead to 14-11, but the Tigers took control with a 6-0 run that included three Lagando kills and a stuff of an Edison overpass. Some big hits from Schafer ended it and put Huron into the district final back on its home court.
