Remember When: Jim Langhurst

Will end the month of September and close out the year 1938 with a story on one of my favorite people when I was writing on the road. His name, Jim Langhurst.October 20, 1938Willard Boy Stands OutYep, that's what it said in a release from Ohio State University. It was not yet called, "The Ohio State University".The headline read, (Willard Boy Stands Out As Brainy Type of Player Possessed With All Vital Factors For Football Stardom". And whoever wrote that headline was dead-on. Jim Langhurst had been a super-star athlete at Willard and he would be the same as a Buckeye. And at this writing, he was only a sophomore and weighed just 168-pounds. He would get his chance as a second-year player due to the injury to veteran Johnnie Rabb, that latter going down with an injury.Also on that team was Sandusky high school sensation Charley Maag, a 210-pound back who is said to be "far behind Langhurst" as far as talent.And as proof of his ability, Langhurst played like what the Ohio State writers called "a one-man show" against Chicago in OSU's 42-7 win"The Willard boy carried the ball 12 times for 81 yards and scored the first three touchdowns of the game.So far this year (and the season was just getting started), he ran a Chicago pass back 23 yards for a score, scored with a 30-yard pass, returned a kickoff 32 yards and had a total gain for the day of 138 yards. He gained 376 yards up to this date while playing only on an average of two periods a game.Oh yes, the former Railroader (that was Willard's nick name), ended the Chicago game by tossing a lateral to a teammate that resulted in a 30-yard score.October 22, 1938NHS Wins, St. Paul HumbledNorwalk High got its first win of the season, a 14-12 victory over Port Clinton, getting scores from Eddie Reineck and Don HalterMeanwhile, at Mansfield Madison, St. Paul was thumped by The Rams from Madison, 59-0. Madison was said to be trying to set the state record for most points in a season. It has scored 243 points in the first six games.October 22, 1938Gray's Have Diamond SeasonThe Monroeville Gray's, champions of the Firelands League in 1938, had its most successful season ever, winning 16 of 20 games. That record came on the heels of 11-5 in 1937 and 13-6 in 1936, finishing second in the league both years. In 1935, their first season, they went 13-9.With an average age of just over 20-years old, the team's oldest member is 27-year-old Marvin Schwan. The youngest is 17-year-old Bob Schild. The team's No. 1 starter is left-hander George Schild, a 30-year-old. He will get a tryout with the Cleveland Indians next spring. He was 14-3 this year.Rollard Faulhaber is the teams leading hitter with a .426 average. Paul Smith is second at .416 and heads the list in five of the nine batting categories.October 24, 1938Carnera All DonePrimo Carnera, who was once thought to be unbeatable in the ring as a 300-pound heavyweight, has proven to be as big a target as he is in weight. Joe Louis made a virtual punching bag out of the big Italian in a championship bout. He knocked him down seven times and finally out of the ring to end the Madison Square Garden title fight.Carnera has now chosen the movies as a living. That was a decision made because his liver was so lacerated from the Louis fight that he do something different. Eight-hundred will be relocated.The farm will keep 200 females and 100 males on site for breeding purposes.November 1, 1938St. Joseph, Monroeville, CelebratesBishop Karl J. Alter said the mass and spoke at Monroeville St. Joseph over the weekend as the parish celebrated its 75th anniversary. The co-celebrant was the present pastor, Rev. G.M. Schmitz.There were several former pastors acknowledged, those being Rev. C. J. Abel, Rev. J.M. Puetz. Rev. Nicholas Schmitz, Rev. Frances Senner and Rev. Albert Kistner.November 1, 1938Mocsary Goes SouthWith the weather turning colder, local golf club pro Andy Mocsary is heading south to operate a driving range in the St. Petersburg, FL area. He has held the post as director of the range for the past five years. He will also play in local PGA events.Mocsary holds the local course record of 29 on the front side and then a 34 on the second nine for a 63. The course plays to a par 73.He will make a stop in West Virginia on the way down to play in a tournament at White Sulphur Springs, Sam Snead's course, and then play an event at Pinehurst, NC.November 9, 1938A Republican SweepState-wise it was GOP sweep as John Bricker won the governor's race, Robert Taft (senator) and locally, Dudley White, the Reflector-Herald owner-publisher, to the U.S. Congress.The same held true in Huron County where the winners were Lawrence Eben (county commissioner) and R.
