Felony forgery warrant issued for Perkins Township man

PERKINS TWP. — Officers charged a Perkins Township man with felonies after he allegedly gave police officers a relative's name as his own during a traffic stop.Police filed warrants for Maurice Smith, 51, of Carbon Avenue, on two fifth-degree felonies — forgery and identity theft — along with misdemeanor obstruction and driving under suspension.Perkins officers stopped a car on Columbus and Electric avenues at about 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, according to a Perkins police report. The car's registered owner was one of Smith's family members, and he allegedly used this relative's name as his own.When signing a form for police, Smith allegedly signed the family member's name on the form, the report states.Police cited Smith with driving under suspension, and released him after having the car towed, according to the report.Officers later learned Smith's true identity by running his Social Security number in a police database, the report states.
