Norwalk boys open NOC with win

NORWALK — The Norwalk boys soccer team got a pair of second-half goals for the difference in a 3-1 win over visiting Huron in the Northern Ohio Conference opener on Wednesday at Contractors Stadium. The Truckers improved to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league with the win. Noah Jameson scored the lone goal of the first half when Kingston Gonzales connected with him on a through ball that he put past the Huron goalkeeper.. The Tigers tied the match early in the second half, but then Jameson again found the back of the net when Conor Nickle passed him the ball for an assist and a 2-1 lead. Just two minutes later, Nickle scored after he corralled a mid-hit goal kick from the Tigers. Nickle popped the ball between two Huron defenders and drilled a shot for the final goal and a 3-1 lead. Defensively, Jack Pittenger, Brady Ream, Derion Johnson, and Roman Snyder held off the Huron attack for the final 25 minutes to preserve the win. Behind them, Miguel Jacobo finished with three saves for the Truckers, who host Ashland (6-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday in non-league play. GIRLS SOCCER Huron 0, Norwalk 0 NORWALK — The Truckers posted their second shutout of the season, but also faced a Tigers team that recorded their fourth shutout in six matches on Wednesday in a scoreless draw at Contractors stadium. Becca Farmer turned away 11 shots by the Tigers to help preserve the tie. It was the first Northern Ohio Conference match of the season for Norwalk, which is 2-4-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the league. The Truckers will host Ashland (3-3-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday in a non-league match. VOLLEYBALL Bucyrus 3,Willard 2 BUCYRUS — The Crimson Flashes suffered another tough five-set Northern 10 Conference loss on Tuesday. Bucyrus posted scores of 16-25, 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, and 15-9. Leah Weiss finished with 12 kills, 22 digs, and served 15 for 15 with an ace for Willard (4-3, 2-3). Mya Stephens had 12 kills, 20 digs, five assists, and was 11 for 13 serving with two aces, while Emelia Tallman had 24 assists, 10 digs, and was 11 for 11 serving with an ace. Also for Willard, Alexis Rettig was 21 for 22 serving with 12 points and one ace and 24 digs. Edyn Carr added 18 digs and was 10 for 11 serving with an ace, while Athelia Atkins and Brinn Trimner each had five kills. "Bucyrus outplayed and outcoached us tonight," Willard head coach Ashley Bond said. "They deserved to win with their heart. We will need to regroup and find a spark to come back and play like we know we can. "Everyone faces hardships in life, but it is how you bounce back when you are at your darkest that defines you." GIRLS GOLF St. Paul 237,Willard 239 WILLARD — The Flyers edged the host Crimson Flashes by two strokes on Sept. 8 at the Willard Golf Club. Alia Bogard led St. Paul with low scoring again with a 54. Annabelle Cooper was next with a 59, followed by Chai Ruffing (60) and Eliza Rospert (64). St. Paul visits Perkins on Monday at Woussickett golf course. BOYS GOLF Bucyrus 190, NL 199, Wynford 238 BUCYRUS — The Wildcats competed against the two local Bucyrus schools on Tuesday at the Bucyrus Golf Club. For New London (9-6), Tate Michell had a 46 and Logan Sword shot a 49. They were followed by Easton Ball (41), Nathan Willis (52), Kade Detterman (54), and Mario Maple (68). Crestview 154, N. London 177 NEW LONDON — The Wildcats fell to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the Firelands Conference with Wednesday's home loss to the Cougars at Millstone Hills. Detterman shot a 41 and Ball had a 42 for New London. Willis (46), Sword (48), Mitchell (62), and Luke Fawcett (62) rounded out the lineup. New London will travel to Plymouth on Tuesday. JUNIOR HIGH NMS volleyball falls NORWALK — The Norwalk Middle School eighth-grade volleyball team lost a pair of close sets to visiting Clyde on Wednesday. The Fliers posted scores of 25-21 and 26-24 to claim the win and drop Norwalk to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the NOC Lake. "The girls fought back and from being down both sets and never gave up," head coach Callie Baker said.
