Run-heavy Bluffton drops Edison

MILAN — Edison's football team has been a book on how to be successful. Friday at Freedom Field brought an uncommon occurrence for the tradition-rich Chargers as they fell to 0-2 on the season after a 42-7 loss to Bluffton. It is the first time Edison has started 0-2 since going 0-10 in 2004. "We definitely have things to learn from these first two games," Edison coach Jim Hall said. "There are things we need to focus on and understand that we have to get better week in and week out." The biggest story of the game featured the quarterback and running back duo of Tayte Giesige and Parker Lovell for the Pirates (2-0). Behind five rushing touchdowns, which featured four from Lovell, the game was never in doubt for the Pirates. For the Chargers, the game featured mistakes that a young, inexperienced team could not make. "Against a team like that who is very experienced, you can not make mistakes," Hall said. "We need to get back in the lab and work on a lot of things." After Edison won the toss and deferred, Bluffton went straight to work driving down the field before Giesige found Lovell on a screen pass that went 36 yards to the house. The point after from Andy Brodman was successful to put Bluffton up 7-0. The Chargers did not get much going on their first drive and after a quarter, it was 7-0. The Pirates then blew the game open scoring twice in 22 seconds. The 14 points featured the legs of Lovell, who opened the second quarter scoring only 24 seconds in from 10 yards out. After the ensuing kickoff, an Evan Schnittker pass was picked off and returned 21 yards to the Edison 9. Lovell then completed the hat trick 22 seconds later and scored from nine yards to make it 21-0. After forcing another turnover on downs, Bluffton ended the half with a 22-yard scamper from Giesige to make the score 28-0. In the second half, Edison forced a fourth-down stop. But, the quarter ended with Lovell scoring his third rushing touchdown of the night from a yard out after he broke off a 65-yard run to set up the score. In the fourth quarter, Max Limberios got the Chargers on the board scoring on a seven-yard scamper. Bluffton ended the scoring with Lovell breaking off a 67-yard run. Edison will look to get into the win column next week as they will travel to Toledo Start. The Spartans opened their season with a win over Norwalk before Friday's loss to Clyde. "In the second half, the guys showed some fight and pride," Hall said. "Looking ahead, it is all about working on the controllables and playing for the guys next to you."
