Norwalk sweeps Vermilion for 3-0 start

NORWALK — The Norwalk volleyball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a three-set sweep over visiting Vermilion on Tuesday at NHS. The Truckers posted scores of 25-13, 25-14, and 25-16. "We started out really strong in the first two sets, but we got a little complacent in the third set," NHS head coach Sarah Kipp said. "We're still looking for consistency from start to finish. "Overall, I'm happy with the way the kids are playing. We're seeing them actively work at the things we're asking them to do, which is always a good thing." Emily Tyler had 20 assists for Norwalk, while Ainslee King from 10 kills and six blocks. Maddie Gamble added 10 digs and Lola Schlotterer had seven. "It's good to be 3-0 because the kids are continuing to battle," Kipp said. "We were down 7-1 in the third set and didn't let up. We still took big swings when we needed to, and blocking we were better tonight than we have been in the past. We spent a lot of time working on that." Norwalk hosts its annual Invitational on Saturday and starts out against Firelands. Crestview 3, South Central 0 OLIVESBURG — The Trojans fell to to 1-1 with a loss at Crestview in the Firelands Conference opener for both teams. The Cougars posted scores of 25-20, 25-19, and 25-19. South Central was led by Zaida Myers with 23 digs and five kills. Keragin Gray had 15 assists and 14 digs, while Claire Howell had 14 digs and served 14 for 14 with two aces. Also for the Trojans, Kenlea Blair had six kills and three blocks, and Ady Stevens also had three blocks.Monroeville 3, Plymouth 0 PLYMOUTH — Monroeville swept Plymouth 25-12, 25-10, 25-13. Sophia Stieber had 13 kills for the Eagles, who are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Firelands Conference. Riley Platte added nine kills. Kaci Poths finished with 25 assists and 10 digs and Addison Homan had 20 digs. Alayna Tyler was 12 for 12 serving with four aces and Myra Paul had four blocks. Willard 3, Seneca East 0 ATTICA — The Crimson Flashes opened the season with a three-set sweep over the host Tigers with scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-12. Leah Weiss led Willard with 14 kills and four digs, while Mya Stephens had seven kills, 11 digs, and four assists. Emelia Tallman was 11 for 13 serving with nine points and four aces, and also had 19 assists and three digs. Also for Willard, Alexis Rettig was 10 for 10 serving wih seven points and 15 digs. Edyn Carr was also 16 for 17 with two aces and six digs. "We got off to a slow start in the first set, and there were a lot of first match of the year type mistakes, including the coaching," Willard head coach Ashley Bond said after 15 of Seneca East's 20 points were on unforced errors. "We did a good job of responding and coming out more relaxed and ready to go," Bond said. "It was good to get the first match of the season under our belts and learn some things that we need to work on. We need to treat every match as an opportunity to learn and get better, which I thought we did tonight." Clyde 3, Edison 0 CLYDE — The Chargers fell in three sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-15) in a non-league match on Tuesday to fall to 0-3 on the season. Peyton Bissell finished with 22 assists and six digs for Edison, while Macari Harris had nine kills and Hadley Goodwin added five. Also for Edison, Peyton Werner had seven kills, and Reese Wells had four kills and five digs. Paisley Keefer had 10 digs, and Mabel Stoll had six. Edison is at the at Sandusky MBK tournament on Saturday. New London 3, Black River 2 NEW LONDON — The Wildcats opened the season on Aug. 18 with a five-set win at Black River. NL posted scores of 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 16-25, and 15-12. Addie Yetter had 15 kills and 25 digs for the Wildcats, while Ella Yetter added 10 kills and 19 digs. Harper Clemons also had 36 assists and was a 100-percent server. On Monday, the 'Cats lost in five sets against Northwestern at home. The Huskies won with scores of 25-18, 23-25, 17-25, 25-23, and 15-7. New London followed that up with a four-set loss to visiting Mapleton in the FC opener. The Mounties won by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, and 25-19. "We are a young team and we are learning to play together," NL head coach Zach Ringler said. "We will have ups and downs throughout the season, but regardless, I need this group to find their heart and play with grit. "We are undersized and communication and fire are going to go a long way for us. We have to find a groove and stay consistent." TENNIS Norwalk 3, SMCC 2 SANDUSKY — Norwalk swept doubles to edge St. Mary Central Catholic, 3-2, in a non-league girls tennis match on Tuesday. The Truckers improved to 6-1 and play at Sandusky on Wednesday in a Northern Ohio Conference match. At first singles, SMCC standout Rachel Spicer defeated Lydia Trost (6-2, 6-2), while Addy Rospert fell (6-0, 6-0) at second singles. Norwalk's Leksi Jurczuk got a win for the Truckers at third singles over Caitlyn Collins (6-0, 2-6, 6-1). The Truckers swept both doubles matches for the win. At first doubles, Riley Helton and Aubrey Kluding defeated Nadia Maxwell and Olivia Swain with tight scores of 6-4, 7-6 (2). At second doubles, the pairing of Libby Lark and Scarlet Schneider beat Grace Will and Serissa Dante (6-1, 6-1). GIRLS SOCCER Edison 5, Open Door 2 MILAN TWP. — Ella Rogers scored two goals, including one on a penalty kick, to lead Edison to a 5-2 win over Open Door Christian. Kailyn Dickman, Juliana Johnson and Ellie Heater each added a goal for the Chargers (1-1). Emma Lesniak had two assists and Camilla Daniel added one assist. Natalie Mees made three saves in goal, including a PK save. Edison host Crestview at 5 p.m. Thursday. GIRLS GOLF St. Paul 238, Vermilion 240 VERMILION — The Flyers won a tight non-league match on Monday against the Sailors at Willow Creek. Alia Bogard again paced St. Paul with a 54. Closely following her was Eliza Rospert (60), Annabelle Cooper (61), and Ava Englert (63).
