Youth excel at quiz bowl, poultry contest

Huron County youth showcased their poultry knowledge and teamwork during the Ohio Avian Quiz Bowl and Poultry Judging Contest held at The Ohio State University on July 11, earning top honors and securing a trip to the national stage. Representing Huron County were both a senior and junior team that competed against youth from across Ohio in events designed to test participants' knowledge of poultry science, breed identification, industry practices, egg quality, management, anatomy, and decision-making skills. The senior team captured the Ohio Avian Quiz Bowl Championship, placing first overall in the highly competitive quiz bowl contest. They additionally demonstrated strong judging skills by earning third place overall in the Poultry Judging Contest. The senior team participants were: • Charlotte Dendinger representing the Bellevue FFA Chapter and Lyme Producers 4-H Club • Izzy Lucha representing the South Central FFA Chapter and Willard Flashes 4-H Club • Claire Hoffman representing the South Central FFA Chapter and Flashes 4-H Club • Riley Major representing the South Central FFA Chapter and Huron County Junior Dairy 4-H Club • Evelyn Linden of Wayne County representing the TriWay FFA Chapter and the Wayne County Hoof and Hide 4-H Club The junior team also had an outstanding day, finishing second overall in the Avian Quiz Bowl and third overall in the Poultry Judging Contest, highlighting the depth of talent within Huron County's youth poultry program. The Junior Team consisted of: • Christopher Seaman, Matt Seaman and Cooper Major of the Huron County Junior Dairy 4-H Club • David Linden of the Wayne County Hoof and Hide 4-H Club • Hazel Karcher of the Lyme Producers 4-H Club By winning the State Avian Quiz Bowl title, the Huron County Senior Avian Quiz Bowl Team has earned the opportunity to represent Ohio at the National Avian Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Kentucky this fall, where they will compete against state champion teams from across the country. The Ohio Avian Quiz Bowl challenges participants to quickly answer questions covering poultry breeds, nutrition, diseases, genetics, management, food safety and the poultry industry. The Poultry Judging Contest requires competitors to evaluate live birds, market poultry, eggs and carcasses while making informed decisions based on industry standards. The success of both Huron County teams reflects the many hours of studying, practicing and preparing for competition. Their achievements demonstrate not only exceptional knowledge of the poultry industry but also the dedication, teamwork, and leadership developed through youth agricultural education programs.
