Hats off to the Honeycutts

NORTH FAIRFIELD — For more than five decades, Herschel and Ruth Honeycutt have built a life together centered on family, service and a willingness to help wherever they are needed. Their many years of giving back to North Fairfield and the surrounding community have earned them recognition as recipients of the 2026 Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year Award, a distinction given out annually by the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging. For those who know the Honeycutts, the honor comes as no surprise. Whether they are volunteering at a community event, helping a neighbor, serving through their church or lending a hand with a project in North Fairfield, Herschel and Ruth have developed a reputation for being two people who rarely say no when someone needs help. Ruth, born in 1954, has lived in North Fairfield her entire life. Herschel was born in Tennessee in 1953 and moved to the area as a young boy. The couple married on Oct. 5, 1974, and will celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary this fall. Their commitment to serving others has taken many forms over the years. Herschel served for 35 years with the North Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department and is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He retired from South Central Local Schools in 2016 after 25 years of service. Ruth retired from Circon ACMI in Norwalk in 2018 after 35 years. For three decades, she has also organized the North Fairfield Community Yard Sales, helping bring residents and visitors together for an event that has become a longstanding community tradition. Together, Ruth and Herschel were involved in bringing the Blessing Box to North Fairfield and both volunteer with the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Food Pantry. They also regularly volunteer at the Senior Center and are active members of Foundation Church in Norwalk, where they serve in a variety of ways. Years ago, the Honeycutts were longtime volunteers with the North Fairfield Haunted Hayride. When the popular tradition was revived at Sweeting Orchards last fall, Ruth and Herschel were once again among the first to volunteer, stepping right back in to help create and staff a scene. Ruth currently serves as vice president of the North Fairfield Improvement Group, where she has played an important role in the organization's efforts to improve the village and its public spaces. Herschel is never far from those projects either, frequently helping wherever his skills are needed. Their service, however, cannot be measured only by volunteer positions or organized projects. Many of the things Ruth and Herschel do for others happen quietly — helping someone organize an event, plan a party, haul something, sew or repair something, paint, clean up or simply show up when an extra set of hands is needed. Herschel is known as someone who can fix just about anything, while Ruth's ability to organize, coordinate and find a bargain often comes in handy. When North Fairfield was struck by a tornado on June 15, 2023, the Honeycutts were among those who immediately stepped forward. They helped coordinate communication among people offering assistance, organize food donations and cleanup efforts, and personally provided labor, services and meals as the community worked to recover. It is that willingness to step in — often without recognition and without being asked twice — that perhaps best defines their contribution to the North Fairfield community. Despite their many volunteer commitments, family remains at the center of their lives. Ruth and Herschel are the parents of Aaron Honeycutt and his wife, Allison, and Amber Hess and her husband, Jason. They have four grandchildren — Gracie, Hannah, Stella and Carson — and enjoy supporting them in their extracurricular activities. When they find time to slow down, Ruth enjoys thrifting and bargain hunting, while Herschel enjoys mowing and working on projects. Together, they especially enjoy attending the summer concert series at the Huron Boat Basin. But slowing down has never been something the Honeycutts do particularly well. For more than 50 years, their lives have reflected a simple approach to community service: see something that needs done, find a way to help and get to work. Their 2026 Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year Award celebrates the many visible contributions they have made throughout Huron County, but perhaps even more importantly, it honors the countless small acts of kindness and service that may never make headlines. For Ruth and Herschel Honeycutt, helping others has never been about receiving recognition. It has simply been a way of life.
