One-vehicle fatal crash involving a pedestrian near Kalahari

PERKINS TOWNSHIP — A California man was killed Sunday evening on U.S. 250 in front of Kalahari. Dennis J. Mahutga, 59, of Corning, Calif., was walking across U.S. 250 at the intersection of Kalahari Drive. Mahutga was struck by an SUV and sustained fatal injuries, according to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The accident occurred at about 7:14 p.m. Amanda R. Horvath, 39, of Milan, was operating a 2013 Buick SUV that hit Mahutga. She was wearing a safety belt and did not sustained any injuries. Ms. Horvath was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. Horvath was southbound on U.S. 250 and the pedestrian was attempting to cross U.S. 250 from Kalahari to the Hy-Miler gas station. The pedestrian was struck in the intersection. Alcohol and/or drugs use are unknown at this time and the crash remains under investigation. The northbound lanes of U.S. 250 were closed for about 2 hours while the scene was investigated. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Erie County Sheriff's Office, Perkins Township Police Department, Huron Fire Department and Foster's Towing.
