Poll worker serves beyond election day

Editor's note: Ahead of the upcoming November elections, the Huron County Board of Elections spotlighted some of the volunteers county voters will encounter at the polls. NORWALK — John Brown's work helping Huron County residents vote extends well beyond election day. Brown greets and checks in voters at Townsend Township Hall, but he also works at the Huron County Administration Building during early voting. There, Brown checks in on voters, provides ballots, assists with curbside voting and monitors the ballot scanner to help keep the voting process running smoothly. His responsibilities also begin before voters arrive at the polls. Brown serves on the election delivery team, which distributes voting equipment to polling locations throughout the county before each election and retrieves it afterward. Brown enjoys working elections because the job allows him to see old friends, meet new people and get to know his fellow poll workers. His favorite assignment is checking in voters and verifying their information because it allows him to "put names to faces," Brown said. For those considering becoming poll workers, Brown said the training classes and materials are beneficial. He also praised the locally produced instructional videos created by students in St. Paul High School's media classes. Brown encourages residents to familiarize themselves with their ballots before heading to the polls. "Take time beforehand to read over the issues and know who is running," Brown said. He also recommends that voters take their time while completing their ballots. Outside of elections, Brown is a dedicated gardener who volunteers with church and community activities.
