Norwalk, NL boys golfers open season

One day after the first practice of the fall, the Norwalk boys golf team opened its season Thursday at the Irish Invitational at Stone Ridge in Bowling Green. The Truckers shot a 355 as a team to finish 18th among the strong 20-team field. Sophomore Jett Scheid paced the Truckers with an 80 Cohen Shoop added a 90 for Norwalk, followed by Avery Reitzel (92), Caleb Thompson (93), Gabe Ramone (96), and Reid Thompson (113). "This tournament brings together some of the top teams in the Northwest, it's really a great showcase of a lot of talent," Norwalk head coach Derek Pigman said. "Besides Jet, the rest of the guys really held it together and played within themselves. "Stone Ridge can be a long course if you play sideways, and the guys listened to their coaches so they were on track for what they typically shoot most of today." Norwalk has a busy week next week, staring Monday at the Ralph Hohenstein Classic hosted by Clyde at Green Hills golf course. The Truckers host Buckeye Central at noon Tuesday before wrapping up the week on Thursday against six Northern Ohio Conference teams at Wousickett golf course. "I think they all played pretty well. I just like their attitudes," Pigman added. "I preach gratitude above all else. I could be in a lot of other places, but I love seeing these guys play and grow into the game of golf." Crestview 170, St. Paul 184 ASHLAND — The Wildcats fell to the host Cougars in the season and Firelands Conference opener on July 30 at Brookside golf course. Kade Detterman earned medalist honors in the dual with a 39. He was followed by Logan Sword and Nathan Willis with 47s, while Luke Fawcett shot a 51. Easton Ball (52) and Tate Mitchell (59) rounded out the lineup for New London, which hosts Seneca East on Tuesday at Millstone Hills.
