Volunteers clean up Norwalk Theatre

NORWALK — On June 20, a group of volunteers gathered inside the Norwalk Theatre for a community clean-out day, helping clear decades of debris and stored materials from the 1941 Art Deco landmark as Norwalk Arts Center prepares for active rehabilitation work. Armed with work gloves and a shared sense of purpose, volunteers from across Huron County spent hours clearing interior spaces that have sat dormant for years, revealing original architectural details, tile work and structural features that speak to the building's storied history and its potential as the future performance and cultural hub. "We are beyond grateful to each and every one of the individuals that showed up on Saturday to haul out the trash and treasures left in our theatre," Dina Lukasko, executive director of Norwalk Arts Center, said. "This community really knows how to show support in so many ways. We simply could not have done this without everyone. A special shout out to members of the St. Paul football team. You are a special group of young men, with exceptional coaches fostering community." The clean-out represents another visible and physical step toward active rehabilitation, a milestone that campaign supporters have been anticipating since the capital campaign began building momentum. NAC's campaign has now raised nearly $9 million toward its $13 million goal, with construction expected to begin as early as late 2026 pending completion of fundraising. The interior of the theatre, designed by architect John Eberson, who designed over 100 theatres across the United States, retains its original Art Deco character, including murals, ornamental plasterwork and structural elements that preservationists have called a rare example of intact mid-century theatre architecture in Ohio. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2022. "We are deeply grateful to the 30 volunteers who joined Norwalk Arts Center on (June 20) to assist with the theatre cleanout," Lisa Bleile, volunteer coordinator and business affairs chair at Norwalk Arts Center, said. "Their willingness to take on difficult and demanding work reflects the strength of community support behind this project. By contributing their time and effort, these volunteers helped NAC reduce expenses that would otherwise have gone to a contractor, allowing more resources to be directed toward the rehabilitation of Norwalk's Historic Theatre."
