Historic fire truck returning

NORWALK — Ahead of a planned restoration project, a historic Norwalk fire truck will get an escort through the city's streets tomorrow. At 2 p.m. Tuesday, people are encouraged to come out and view as the vehicle first put into service by the city's fire department in 1912 travels to the former fire station on Whittlesey Avenue. "This historic journey marks another milestone in the Norwalk Fire Truck Restoration Project, bringing the community together to celebrate an important piece of Norwalk's firefighting heritage," a news release from the City of Norwalk states. "Residents are encouraged to line the escort route and welcome the truck as it returns to the station where it once served the citizens of Norwalk more than a century ago. The truck will be available for viewing after it arrives at the former fire station, next to City Hall." The city explained the escort route: • It starts at 2 p.m. at Norwalk Concrete, 80 Commerce Drive. • It will then travel on U.S. 20/Cleveland Road, then west on Main Street. • Finally, it will continue north on Whittlesey Avenue and end at the former fire station located at 42 Whittlesey Avenue. The truck will undergo an estimated $225,000 restoration overseen by a fire truck restoration committee and the Firelands Historical Society. Once complete, the historical society will donate the engine to the city, which will display it at Station 1912.
