Edison's Blake Simon takes SBC Bay top honor

Edison senior Blake Simon followed in his older brother's footsteps to take home player of the year honors in the SBC Bay Division. The league announced Most Outstanding Performers in all three baseball divisions on Tuesday, as chosen by the Sandusky Bay Conference coaches. In addition to Simon, the top honorees were Columbian's Isaiah Tilse (Lake) and New Riegel's Shane Jones (River). The left-handed Simon is the staff ace and bats in the middle of the order for the Chargers (16-5, 8-2), who won a third straight Bay Division championship. Simon has a 4-1 record on the mound with a 1.78 ERA. He has also batted .358 for Edison, the top seed in its Division III Shelby district. Also for Edison — ranked No. 13 in the Division III state coaches poll — Carson Smith and Marcus Medina earned first team spots on the infield. Cole Leimeister was first team in the outfield. Through 19 games, Smith was batting .380 with 14 RBIs and Medina was batting .393 with 14 RBIs. Leimeister bats .440 with 16 RBIs. Second team choices for the Chargers included pitcher Abe Hermes (2.00 ERA, 28 Ks) and outfielder Davin Wendt (.350, 18 RBIs). For Willard (11-11, 4-6), Isaac Robinson (infield) and Elijah Reed (outfield) were first team selections). Robinson batted .413 with 12 RBIs, while Reed was batting .377 with nine doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs. Infielders Ethan Rodriguez (.408, seven doubles, nine RBIs) and Ryan Fox (.390, seven doubles, 11 RBIs) were second team for the Flashes, while Anthony Potts (.281, 15 RBIs) was honorable mention at catcher. Tilse was one of five unanimous selections to the SBC Lake first team after setting Columbian's single-season and career strikeout records over the weekend while still only a junior. Also in the Lake, Norwalk junior Isaiah Wells was selected to the second team.
