WAKEMAN — Four local projects the Ohio Department of Transportation that cost, in total, about $10 million, are underway in Huron County, spokeswoman Crystal Neelon said.

The most expensive construction is a resurfacing project on U.S. 20 west of Wakeman to the Lorain County line. Traffic will be maintained by flaggers, but the road will be reduced to one lane of traffic for a resurfacing project and structure repairs.

“This is a $7 million project,” said Neelon, since it also includes similar work on U.S. 20 and Ohio 511, both in Lorain County.

“They are still on target for October,” she added, referring to the estimated completion date.

A bridge repair over the Vermilion River in Wakeman also is on U.S. 20. Neelon said the estimated the $1.5 million project started at the beginning of the summer and should wrap up in October.

“It’s a really old bridge, so that would be one we would not replace,” she added.

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained, with reduced lane widths and traffic shifted to complete the repair work.

A third project on U.S. 20 is what ODOT refers to as a “slide repair.” The project is on U.S. 20 eastbound, just east of the U.S. 250 exit ramp on the Norwalk bypass.

Neelon said the $456,000 project will repair the hillside/embankment which has been slipping or eroding. She also said the preliminary work started in 2018, so it’s not an emergency issue and is expected to be completed in October.

That portion of U.S. 20 will have a single-lane closure while crews build a retaining wall.

“That project began Aug. 1,” Neelon said.

Finally, the bridge on U.S. 224 in Greenwich, between Park Drive and Orchard Street, is closed for a repair project.

“This one just began construction in August,” Neelon said, referring to the $588,000 job.

The detour route for eastbound motorists is U.S. 224 to Ohio 61, north to Ohio 162, then east to Ohio 13 and south to U.S. 224. The road is expected to be reopened Nov. 8.
