Five from Monroeville and Plymouth earn All-FC first team

Five area players from Monroeville and Plymouth earned a spot on the first team on the All-Firelands Conference softball teams, it was announced on Thursday.

Monroeville senior pitcher Carley Helmstetter, along with senior outfielder Alex Carper and sophomore second baseman Payton Scheid represented the Eagles on the first team.

As the ace pitcher, Helmstetter was 18-4 with a 1.67 ERA in 27 appearances this season. She struck out 186 batters with 38 walks in 146 2/3 innings of work. Helmstetter, an All-Ohio first team selection, also hit .416 with seven doubles, three triples, two home runs and 24 RBIs for the Eagles.

Carper batted .424 for the season with four doubles, four triples and 24 RBIs. She also scored 25 runs. Scheid finished with a .362 average along with eight doubles, four triples and 22 RBIs. She scored 37 runs, and was also 5-1 with a 1.93 ERA in the circle.

Monroeville finished 23-5 overall this season. The Eagles finished second in the FC behind Crestview, and won the program’s only district title with a win in extra innings over Lucas in a Division IV title game in Shelby on May 17. Monroeville went on to reach a regional title game, falling to Hillsdale on May 25.

Meanwhile, Plymouth seniors Tristen Wiley and Shilo Plank were first team selections for the Big Red.Head coach Tracy Arnold was named Coach of the Year in the league after guiding Plymouth to 20-7 season.

The Big Red went 11-3 in the FC and also won a sectional title. Wiley hit .410 with 11 doubles, three triples and 21 RBIs. Plank finished hitting .393 with 10 doubles, two triples, one home run and 24 RBIs.

Earning second team at pitcher was Plymouth senior Mallory Miller and South Central freshman Madison Prater.

St. Paul had a pair of position players on the second team in sophomore Olivia Englert and junior Kennedy Stang. Sophomore teammate Marlaina Sowers was honorable mention.

Other second team selections from thee area included Monroeville seniors Jessica Hayes and Skiler Hershiser; Plymouth seniors Morgan Chaffins and Emily Akers; New London seniors Kelsey Boswell and Gabby Ledbetter; South Central junior Taylor Sexton and Western Reserve senior Izabelle Good.

Honorable mention choices from the area included Western Reserve senior Hannah Grose, New London senior Lili Bartow, Plymouth senior Emily Blanton, Monroeville sophomore Callie Rosser and South Central freshman Ardana Pace.
