Gibbs was the main speaker for the party’s annual dinner at the Norwalk Eagles. Roughly 100 people attended. Gibbs is representative for Ohio's 7th congressional district, which includes southern Huron County.
Gibbs replaced U.S. House Rep. Jim Jordan at the dinner, who backed out of the speaking engagement because of obligations in Washington, D.C.
“Congressman Jordan will not be able to attend (the) event because of scheduled interviews in the Democrats’ rigged impeachment process,” Jordan’s spokesman Ian Fury told the Reflector.
Gibbs also acknowledged Jordan’s absence, saying, “Our leadership members, like Jim, have to be there so (the investigation) is not one-sided,” and called the impeachment inquiry “renegade.”
The president faces an impeachment inquiry following a July 25 phone call with the Ukranian president in which it appears Trump asked Ukrain to investigate his potential 2020 political opponent, Joe Biden, and Biden’s son. The Democrats launched an impeachment inquiry alleging a quid pro quo took place.
Gibbs also said that Democrats have taken the text of the conversation between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky out of context.
During the speech, Gibbs referred to the CBS program “60 Minutes” as a “hack job,” and said the program presented the content of the phone call out of context. “Some of the corrupt news media will take (this) and… be very deceitful,” Gibbs said.
“(Trump) is talking about corruption that happened in 2016 and before, he’s not talking about anything going forward in the election,” Gibbs said. “It was quite obvious in the testimony that there was no quid pro quo, there was no pressure on the Ukrainian president.”
Gibbs said he believes Democrats are dedicated to simply impeaching President Trump.
“I think the American people see the farce that is going on in the house,” Gibbs said. “(Democrats) aren’t doing anything except trying to impeach the president and not one of their top 10 bills deal with infrastructure, immigration or the cost of healthcare.”
The congressman believes the impeachment process will backfire.
“President Trump is not going to get kicked out of office, so why are we doing this charade?” Gibbs said.
Gibbs also addressed what he deemed to be major wins for the Republicans this year, including an improving economy, progress on energy independence and tax reform.
“The economy is doing great, we have a million-and-a-half job openings in this country and people to fill them,” Gibbs said. “We’re doing this with virtually no inflation.”
Gibbs said the Democrats’ ideas for the country are unrealistic and would double the country’s budget.
“The Democrats want to do away with fossil fuels, but we can produce our fossil fuels in an environmentally friendly way and build the economy,” he said.
The congressman also said the Green Deal is less about environmental change and more about social change.
“The House is controlled by the Democrats that has been hijacked by the liberal socialists,” he said.
Gibbs said if more trade deals are done, the economy will continue to take off. He also said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is not putting the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on the floor because it would be approved and claimed the Democrats hatred for the president is more important than trade deals.
“These people are putting politics ahead of the country, so we need to get USMCA done,” Gibbs said.
