Donel Dean Gibson

ELYRIA — Donel Dean Gibson, 87, of Elyria, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, in Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake, surrounded by his family.

He was born Oct. 4, 1932, in Hueysville, Ky., to Thomas and Annie (Martin) Gibson, and had been a New Haven resident before moving to Elyria. He was a member of the Pleasant View Church of Old Regular Baptist in Litchfield, Ohio, and had been an ordained minister for 44 years. He retired from Plymouth Locomotive and was an U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War.

Donel is survived by his wife, Marjorie Slone Gibson; daughter, Brenda and Junior Ruggles of Ironton; five sons, Gerald and Val Gibson of Willard, Claude and Sonja Gibson of Willard, Joseph and Sandy Gibson of Willard, Mark and Lenora Gibson of Willard and Donel and Diana Gibson II of Norwalk; stepchildren, Belinda Elliott of Elyria and Doug Slone of New Port Richey, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Wanda Hale of Alabama, Janet and William Barnett of Fort Worth, Texas, and Elnora and Russell Patton of Perrysburg; brother, Thomas J. and Laurie Gibson of Mobile, Ala.; sister-in-law, Shelby Gibson; and brother-in-law, Doug Summers.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gwendale (Vanderpool) Gibson in 2001; parents, Thomas and Annie (Martin) Gibson; three sisters, Dorsey Summers, Betty Rowe and Anna Montgomery; one brother, Merland Gibson; and three brothers-in-law, James Hale, Claude Rowe and Ben Montgomery.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, until services at 6 p.m., at Little Rebecca Church of Old Regular Baptist, 4982 Henry Road, Plymouth. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at the church. The burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in New Haven.
