He was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Sandusky, and was a lifelong resident of Monroeville. Don was employed for more than 30 years with the Ohio Operating Engineers, Local 18, Cleveland. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church’s in Norwalk and Pontiac. He enjoyed the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara (Scheid) Smith; children, Donna (Ed) Kay of Monroeville, Duane Burris of Huron, Keith Burris of Norwalk, and Cheryl Downs of Monroeville; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joanne Smith; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by son, Donald E. Smith Jr.; daughter, Gloria Roberts; his parents, Warren and Emma (Long) Smith; and six siblings.
Friends may call 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe St., Monroeville, and from 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, until funeral services at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, 243 Benedict Ave., Norwalk. The Rev. Ann Marshall will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Pontiac, Ohio.
