He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Beckley, W.Va., and lived in Norwalk for 56 years. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Auto Plastic in Monroeville. He was a licensed ordained Elder and a faithful Minister and was a Sunday School Superintendent at Christ Temple Church in Norwalk, under the late Elder Ray H. Robinson Sr. He was also involved with community services where he was an advocate for orphans.
Sonny enjoyed studying the Bible, landscaping, gardening, wood working, shopping, traveling, and making his famous sweet potato pies.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Mary G. Myrick-Coles; his daughters, Stephanie (Monty) Henderson, Mary (Willie Sr.) Johnson, and Ellen “Theresa” Coles; four stepchildren, Hyestine Jones, John Jones, Hyester Jones, and Ransom Tarrant Jr.; eight grandchildren, Jason Coles, Courtney Coles, Jared Johnson, Willie Johnson Jr., Taylar Johnson, Monty Henderson Jr., Darien Henderson, and Erika Henderson; eight step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a cousin, Louise Boyd; a spiritual family, the Robinson’s; and other loving relatives and friends.
Sonny was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline (Taylor) Coles; his son, Sonny B. Coles Jr.; mother, Carrie Banks; and brother, James Boyd.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. Saturday Oct. 19, until services at 11 a.m., at Evans Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk. Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Monday Oct. 21, at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Seville Ohio.
