Time to push the church into its proper placement in culture

NOTE: The following letter to the editor was submitted by Richard Missler of Norwalk.

Recently the Papacy observed that there are cultural differences around the world in regard to sexual activity by adults with minors, partially as an explanation for clerical sexual abuse and partly as an impediment to policy implementation.

Scripture, by the Lord himself, has no such ambiguity — tie a boulder around your neck and jump off a cliff into the sea.

The Holy See has another problem and that is its status as a sovereign state. While the Vatican is within this delimitation, the church has functioned, at least in the abuse crisis, as an entity unto itself around the world. This is more ambiguity.

The abuse crisis amounts to an attempt to police the church by secular authorities. The administrators of the church willfully stonewalled these efforts. The stonewalls around the Vatican need to come down as history continues to progressively push the church into its proper progressively push the church into its proper placement in culture.
