Kudos to the Ohio House of Representatives for the recent passage of House Bill 6 which creates the Ohio Clean Air Program to promote zero and reduced carbon emissions energy production while protecting Ohio jobs and our economy.
The Ohio Senate should follow their lead and get this important legislation to the Governor’s desk for his signature. Once enacted, HB 6 will help protect nuclear power which is by far our state’s largest source of emissions-free energy.
Failure to act on this important issue will lead to the premature closure of our state’s two nuclear power facilities. If that happens, all Ohioans will lose. The power generated by the Davis-Besse and Perry nuclear power plants accounts for 90 percent of the carbon-free energy produced in Ohio. If these plants close early, the power that replaces them will most likely be generated by less clean energy sources.
These two nuclear power facilities support thousands of jobs at the plants and with vendors and suppliers throughout northern Ohio which are vital to our local economy. These jobs not only support our friends and neighbors but generate significant tax revenue that benefits our schools and many community programs. Simply put, we can’t afford to nix nuclear energy. Creating incentives to encourage zero and reduced carbon emissions energy production is good public policy. It is now time for our state senators to support the continued production of clean, secure, affordable, and reliable energy by nuclear power.
