Pioneer Rubber head named to Willard council

WILLARD — Jack H. Gibson was chosen by the village council to fill a vacancy on the council caused when Frank Jarres, president, became mayor upon the resignation of William Hite. He is president of the Pioneer Rubber Company.

Robert Jump, businessman, was elected to be the solons’ new president.

Mayor Jarres so far this year has been preceded by three other mayors, R. Wayne Miller, who resigned the last of March, Ralph Tuchings, who resigned after serving one month.

Hite, former council president, served from May 1 to Sept. 1.


Lima bean pack underway at local plant

With the corn pack for this season completed last week at the local plant of Stokely-Van Camp, Inc., work is already in progress with the lima bean pack.

Art Gassman, plant manager, reported that cabbage and pumpkin would follow the bean pack.

Despite the reported good yields of field corn expected, Mr. Gassman stated that sweet corn harvest was not as good as in previous seasons, describing the 1955 corn season as fair.

Corn packed the last few weeks is leaving the local plant in carload lots.


Stray dog blamed for mishap

Gerald Lowers, 22, New London, suffered an arm injury and was shaken up yesterday afternoon when he rolled the Nickles Bakery truck he was driving on Rt. 250, four miles south of here.

Lowers, who was enroute to New London, told highway patrolmen he lost control of the vehicle after swerving to avoid striking a dog on the highway.

The dog trotted off unharmed.


St. Peter Evening Guild

The St. Peter’s Evening Guild met Tuesday evening in the church parlors. Mrs. Willard Olcott read an article entitled “The Duties and Privileges of Parents and Teachers” from “The Outlook.”

Mrs. Norman Ross presided at the installation of the following new officers: Mrs. Olcott, president; Mrs. Walter Meagrow, vice-president; Mrs. Richard Ross, secretary; Mrs. John Cox, treasurer; Mrs. John Covill, membership chairman; Mrs. Arthur Kistemaker Jr., Mission Band; Mrs. Angus Barton, sunshine chairman.

Plans were made by the group to help with the cafeteria at the Huron County Fair.
