New London fire station available for cold-weather shelter

NEW LONDON — Village Mayor John Martin told council Monday the fire station would emain open until 4 p.m. or later today to shelter anyone in need because of the cold weather.

No bedding or food will be provided, but someone will staff the station at all times. Contact the police department before coming to the fire station, 30 Prospect St., New London. Police can be reached at 419-935-3504.

New London has to use up its revolving loan fund of $171,000 because the state is dissolving all the funds unless they are used.

New London Local Schools made a proposal to partner with the village for a $12,000 project that would provide free Wi-Fi to a large portion of the village. No action was taken on the request.

The Alliance Church asked council’s permission to have a community garden at the old school site on Park Avenue. No action was taken.

Council approved police Chief Mike Marko’s request to promote Wilson Velazquez from reserve to part-time officer at $11 an hour and hire Jacob Johnson as a full-time officer at $15 an hour.

The Super Raffle to benefit the parks starts at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Hileman Building, with tickets available at the door.

Council went into executive session to discuss the possible discipline of an employee and hiring a campground manager for the New London Reservoir Park and Campground. Heather Brown was chosen for that position.
