Council OK's income tax levy for November ballot

NEW LONDON — At Monday’s meeting, the New London village council renewed the contract with the Huron County Sheriff’s Office for dispatching services for the police and fire departments.

Also benefiting those first responders was a discussion council had about continuing to bring in dollars the fund the departments.

A new zoning permit fee schedule was introduced and council directed the Board of Elections to put the renewal of a 1/2-percent income tax on the November ballot. The money is used only for the police and fire departments.

In other council news:

• Members also voted to lease a new garbage truck from TCF Equipment Finance for no more than $188,500.

• Council accepted the resignation of water and sewer department employee Mike Witmer. An ordinance to allow commercial use in a light industrial zoned district was tabled.

• Downtown property owner Erik VonKamp presented a bill for $10,000 to council at the last meeting for the cost of replacing the sidewalk in front of his storefront. Council took no action, and at this meeting VonKamp read a letter stating the damage to the sidewalk was the responsibility of the village and again asked the bill be paid.
