Cops, school have 'no issues at all' when responding to threat rumors

MONROEVILLE — Local law enforcement agencies had a presence Friday morning at Monroeville Local Schools as a preventive measure in response to unsubstantiated rumors of possible threats to student safety.

“Honestly, we could have gotten away without it,” Superintendent Ralph Moore said.

The Monroeville Police Department and Huron County Sheriff’s Office were at the schools.

“We had a great response,” Moore said. “We had one officer at the high school entrance and another by the elementary school. We wanted to be highly visible and do what we said we were going to do.”

Police Chief Gary Lyons said everyone was on their best behavior Friday morning, noting he and other officers were at the school “just to be on the safe side in response to some vague rumors.”

“No issues at all,” he said, adding that sometimes officers will patrol the building in similar situations.

The school notified local law enforcement officials when the rumors first began to circulate. Moore said people were spreading information about which they had no information and “ran with it” on social media, so he thought it was best for the comfort and safety of the students, and parents and community to have police at the school.

“We had several threats that stemmed from a discipline situation that police were aware of,” the superintendent added.

“At this time there is nothing to indicate there is any substance to the rumors. Monroeville expects to conduct a normal school day without any unexpected interruption. The situation was created by random social media posts and will continue to be closely monitored with additional action taken if necessary,” Moore said in a prepared statement emailed to the Reflector.
