MILAN — Students attending Edison schools were welcomed back to school Wednesday with some new programs in addition to the return of some old ones.

“A new program this year is a social-emotional learning curriculum for kindergarten through eighth-graders,” said Superintendent Tom Roth.

“It helps teach kids leadership skills and more to prepare for life, work, how to get along with each other.”

A new, old course beginning for students this (2019-20) school year is health.

“With everything that’s going on in society, we need to get our kids back to focusing on their health,” Roth said of the course that had been absent from Edison for several years. “It will be good for (the) kids.”

Additionally, some students this year will see a daily homeroom-type class added to their schedule, which will tack just 20 more minutes onto the day.

“We’re just happy to be back at school. It’s been a smooth first day,” he said.
