$117,281 awarded to 23 local, non-profit organizations

SANDUSKY — The Erie County Community Foundation has announced the completion of its Round 1 2018 community grants cycle.

Funding for these grants was made possible as the result of a major grant to the Community Foundation from the Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation and the support of many donors in the community. The Round 1 grants have resulted in $117,281 being awarded to 23 local, non-profit organizations.

Grants were awarded to organizations in Berlin Heights, Huron, Kelleys Island, Margaretta, Perkins, Sandusky and Vermilion.

Many of grants were awarded to organizations that serve all of Erie County.


In the category of Youth Services, grants were awarded to:

New Day Family Resource Center - $1,658 for “Party Zone” Program 


In the category of Social Services, grants were awarded to:

Cancer Services of Erie County - $5,000 for Cancer Medication Program

Firelands Habitat for Humanity - $5,000 for House #100’s Foundation

Goodwill Industries - $2,170 for “Point of Sale” System

OHgo - $10,000 for Construction of a Food Pantry

Sandusky Main Street Association - $2,600 for Farmers Market “Double Up Bucks” Program

Volunteer of America Crossroads - $5,000 for Building Enhancements in Family Common Area


In the category of Environment, grants were awarded to:

Friends of Sandusky Greenhouse - $8,640 for Veterans Gold Star Family Memorial

Ohio Historical Society - $5,000 for Accessibility for Kellys Island Glacial Grooves Preserve


In the category of Community Development/Municipalities, grants were awarded to:

Berlin Heights Community Center - $5,000 for Parking Lot Pavement

Erie County Agricultural Society - $5,000 for Grading & Blacktop Parking Lot at Fairgrounds

Erie County Regional Planning - $900 for 250 Safety Vests


In the category of Arts and Humanities, grants were awarded to:

BGSU Foundation for Carol Crane Youth Theatre, $1,000 for Production Support of “Juni B. Jones”

Firelands Symphony Orchestra - $3,000 for Summer Ensemble Concerts

Main Street Vermilion - $2,752 for Vermilion Lighthouse Storyboards

Maritime Museum of Sandusky - $5,000 for Exhibit & Archive Expansion

Merry Go Round Museum - $5,273 for Boiler Repair Project

Vermilion News Print Shop Museum - $1,900 for Electrical Upgrades w/Ceiling Fans


In the category of Education/Schools, grants were awarded to:

Edison Local Schools - $5,000 for High School Science Department Renovations

Perkins Local Schools - $3,300 for Eighth Grade Class Trip to Gettysburg

Sandusky Central Catholic Schools - $3,000 for Five Security Doors

Sandusky Education Foundation - $30,000 for Sandusky City Schools Natatorium Project

Sandusky Library - $1,088 for Architecture in Erie County STEAM Kits


The Erie County Community Foundation continues a tradition of mindful, effective grant making, addressing a variety of needs throughout Erie County. Each year, the Foundation holds two grant cycles, in which the deadline for 2018 Round II grant applications is August 1. In the twenty three years since its inception, The Erie County Community Foundation has awarded more than $6 million to organizations in Erie County.
