Twilight Gardens gains 'good leadership and direction' for success

A longtime business in this community is now under new owners, who hopes to lead it into a successful future. 

Spring Lake Healthcare took over Twilight Gardens on June 1 with big plans for the future of the nursing home and rehabilitation center. There are currently 68 residents at the facility, which has the potential to house at least 90.

CEO of Spring Lake and one of the new owners, Michael Penendaun, said the group saw the potential the Maple City offered for the business. He said he came across Twilight while researching other businesses in the area. Its good reputation stood out, Penendaun said.

“I knew it had a very good track record with the state and its quality of care and some of its individualized services,” he said. “I thought the building could be a really, really shining start in the community. …It’s got good bones to the building with some good leadership and a direction we feel it’s going to do well and really succeed.”

In the first month, the company has already made adjustments with positive feedback. Penendaun’s first move was the hiring of Stephanie Kaganofn as the building’s new administrator. Then came a number of other, relatively smaller changes. 

Penendaun said Spring Lakes changed several vendors to support local companies, including those who support what the residents eat and do. 

“We changed the food already and it’s been well received,” he said. “We brought on a new, local vendor who will be helping with menus and dietary products, and in selecting the things we’re using. We’re using less processed foods and more made-from-scratch (recipes).”

Penendaun said the nursing center plans to add “support, additional activities and additional programing,” to further improve the quality of the residents’ lives. 

Perhaps one of the most exciting changes to come will be the addition of tele-medicine, which will allow the facility to have healthcare services, health assessments and consultations available remotely, via the internet. This makes it easier for the residents to receive the care they need without having to leave the building. 

Residents will also benefit from the facility’s updated ventilator system; other physical improvements are in the works as well. 

“We already have architects looking at the building for a potential remodel in the future,” Penendaun said. “We’re looking at creating a new lobby area and therapy room and looking at putting in a designated receptionist area.”

While Penendaun said he has a lot of plans for the nursing home’s future, he said he wants to make sure the community is involved in the process and in Twilight’s continued growth.

“For whatever reason, the prior company wasn’t as involved in the community as it could have been,” he said.

“That’s so important, especially in a smaller community. Norwalk is such a small, close-knit community. You have to have the community involved and you have to be involved with them — getting in with the Rotary and the chamber (of commerce) and just really being a part of the community and supporting local vendors.”

Penendaun said Twilight plans to do community events in the near future, including a kick-off for back-to-school time. He said more details on those events will come as the process of the new move settles down and the date gets closer. 

“One hundred percent, we want to be involved in the community, with the community events and school events,” he said.

New leader at UH

Timothy Kasprzak assumed the role of chief medical officer at University Hospital’s Samaritan Medical Center effective June 1. He replaces James Mooney, who stepped down after serving in the role for the past four years. Mooney remains at UH, providing inpatient clinical services.

University Hospitals is part of the recently-opened urgent care facility in New London.

Kasprzak comes to UH from the MetroHealth System where he served in multiple leadership roles including medical staff president and director of abdominopelvic and oncologic imaging.

His focus initially will be on expansion and delivery of care.

“Healthcare is undergoing tremendous changes as we seek to improve quality and access, while decreasing costs,” he said. “UH and Samaritan are taking a proactive approach to expanding our community presence and integrating care delivery in a way that is patient-centric. We want to deliver outstanding care in the community in which people live. In the long run, the expansion will enable patients to have more options, better care and a better overall experience with our healthcare system.”


Firelands Electric holds 81st annual meeting

NEW LONDON — Around 600 members and guests attended Firelands Electric Cooperative’s 81st annual meeting of members, held June 22 at Myers Convocation Center on Ashland University’s campus.

Incumbents Bruce Leimbach, Carl Ayers and W.E. Anderson were re-elected to the cooperative's board of trustees to represent districts 4, 5 and 8, respectively.

General manager Dan McNaull addressed the group in attendance about rates and reliability. He announced the cooperative is constantly watching expenses and has avoided the need for a rate increase by holding down controllable expenses. In 2018, the cooperative and its employees held down controllable expenses at its lowest level in four years, while earning healthy operating margins that were more than double of last year, and received a record high ACSI (American Customer Satisfaction Index) score of 87 in member satisfaction.

McNaull noted the primary causes of power outages over the past year were trees, followed by animals and weather.

“Even though we can’t control things like animals, trees, weather, transmission lines, and automobile drivers with cell phones, we are continuously working to upgrade our distribution system to minimize the effects of these outage instigators,” McNaull said.

Firelands is in the process of developing an extensive four-year construction work plan for 2020 through 2023. This plan will put an emphasis on upgrading main tie lines between substations, to permit power being rerouted during outages and for maintenance work. The cooperative is looking at certain areas where blinks have occurred, and areas where heavier lines are needed to handle growing electrical loads.

One major budget consideration in the cooperative’s work plan is to add a second transmission feed to its New London substation, which is dependent on a single feed supplying the entire village and surrounding area. McNaull stated the four-year work plan is expected to be in the range of $10 million — a significant figure when considering the system’s present value is $49 million — but pointed out that the investment is necessary to ensure the reliability that Firelands Electric Co-op owners deserve.


Submit safety awards apps

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) is accepting applications from Ohio employers for its annual Safety Innovation Awards.

The awards program recognizes employers for innovative and creative solutions they’ve developed to reduce the risk of injuries and illnesses in their workplace. Innovations can include advanced technologies, creative use of existing equipment, or unique processes and practices.

“Ohioans have a rich history of innovation. That same spirit of ingenuity carries over too many employers throughout our state today,” said BWC Administrator/CEO Stephanie McCloud. “We offer this program to give innovative employers the credit and recognition they deserve for finding new and better ways to protect their workers from injury and illness on the job.”

BWC will announce the winners from a group of finalists at its annual Ohio Safety Congress & Expo, scheduled for March 11 through 13, in Columbus. Cash awards range from $6,000 for first place to $1,500 for honorable mention.
