Michaels craft store not coming to Norwalk

Norwalk’s Pat Catan’s was not selected as one of the 12 locations to be revamped as a Michaels craft store.

It is expected to close for good this fall

The Pat Catan’s in Sandusky, however, did make the cut and will be gearing up to make the switch, Michaels Companies Inc. public relations manager Mallory Smith said.

“We can confirm that after a comprehensive review, we have identified Sandusky as one of the 12 Pat Catan's locations that we intend to rebrand and reopen as new Michaels stores later this year,” she told the Reflector. “We look forward to reopening and inspiring the Sandusky community to unleash their inner maker.”

The news was less fortunate for the 80 Whittlesey Ave., Norwalk store, which Smith said is expected to close in early October.

“After carefully reviewing a number of factors, including the existing store’s operations, overlap with Michaels stores, profitability and longer-term growth potential, we have decided that this location is not a viable go-forward location for us,” she explained.

The Norwalk location will mark its two-year anniversary next month.

“We greatly appreciate the support the Norwalk community has given the Pat Catan’s team, and I know our Pat Catan’s team has enjoyed serving the Norwalk community,” Mallory added. “Please know that we are committed to providing opportunities for all impacted team members and are working closely with our team members to help manage through this transition.”

In late January, Michaels announced it intended to close all but 12 of the 35 Pat Catan’s locations throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia. The Pat Catan’s chain was purchased by Michaels less than three years ago for $150 million.
