Local celebrity makeup artist to be featured in fashion magazine

NEW LONDON — Shannon Michael, owner of Shannon Michael Style, received the email of a lifetime recently.

Michael, a 2000 New London High School and EHOVE Career Center graduate, said her bridal makeup talent caught the eye of scouts for Harper’s BAZAAR magazine, who reached out, asking her to be a makeup artist for their April issue and future issues of their fashion magazine.

“I was just in shock,” Michael said about receiving the email out of the blue.

She said the scouts of Harper’s were viewing information on her website shannonmichaelstyle.com and were impressed — something that might seem insignificant to others, but meant the world to Michael.

“Coming from New London, Ohio and doing makeup, my business isn’t really a rewarded business around here. People don’t really see my job as a real career. The only reward you get is the recognition when something like this happens.

“This tells me I have made it,” she said with excitement. “This is everything.” 

Michael owns Studio 162 - Independent Salons, a booth rental salon business. However, she works mostly in Cleveland. 

After she was asked to fly to Los Angeles for styling of the April issue of Harper’s, she reluctantly turned down the opportunity due to having a wedding scheduled that same day. Magazine representatives respected her decline and asked her to style for future issues.

Michael takes her business here in Ohio very seriously and she genuinely cares about each of her clients, she said. She plans to do another project with Harper’s very soon.

To Michael, her brides are the most important aspect of her career. While she knows other artists would have asked their bride to find another artist in order to debut in the magazine, she said for her, it was about priorities.

“My goal is not to be in LA doing hair and makeup, like others might want,” she said. “This is where I want to be.

“The Cleveland wedding and event market is huge. This area is listed as the second-most expensive place to get married. We are still an up-and-coming market, but it’s going really well. I’m in a really good position here, where a lot of people know my work. I have a really good home and I love all the friends I’ve made along the way.”

Michael, who was trained by celebrity stylist Jill Marinelli, said this opportunity was a crowning moment and confirmation of what she could do.

“I’ve completed my goals,” she said. “Now I just want to live them and continue to grow to be the absolute best I can be in them.” 

Michael, along with her husband Mike and 2-year-old son, Maverick, still live in New London, where she said she’s happy to stay. 

“I have always been a small-town girl with big dreams. I hope to be a good example to my son and anyone looking to follow their dreams. I have always said, ‘Work hard, stay focused, listen to your gut and learn from your mistakes.’”

Shannon recently launched her own cosmetic line SM Cosmetics. The brand is “focused on being one of the best cosmetic lines for event makeup.”

This month she is opening The Luxe Beauty Lounge, which specializes in bridal and event styling only. She also offers wardrobe and bridal dress styling.

“I want to be your one-stop style shop,” Michael said when asked about her business goals.

When asked why she chose the bridal route with her hair and makeup, she replied: “I didn't choose bridal. It chose me.”

Michael originally started out as a model, but realized in high school “that wasn’t going to happen” because of “height issues.” So she turned her attention to hair styling in cosmetology, which led her to makeup and eventually her specialty — bridal.

“I would say I loved it, but it would be an understatement,” she said of the bridal world in cosmetology. “I’m honestly completely obsessed with it.”

Michael said that’s something that sets her business apart.

“Most of our competitors are salons that do bridal on the side, so we’re not even on the same level,” she said. 

“When you come to us, bridal and event (makeup and hair), that’s all our people do all day, every day. We don’t do just average coloring and cutting. In the medical field, we’re the specialists. Other salons could be like your family physicians.”

Goodwill moving in Huron

HURON — Huron’s Goodwill store is moving.

Goodwill Industries of Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky counties recently closed on a property located on the west side of the city of Huron at the corner of Lake Erie Parkway and Hy-Miler Boulevard, near the Ohio 6/Rye Beach Road exit for Ohio 2.

The property, which includes about 3 acres, was brokered by Hoty Realty and owned by District Petroleum. Goodwill currently operates a retail store at the Commerce Plaza Shopping Center off Cleveland Road on the east side of the city of Huron.

“While we love our current location and the great relationship we have with Jamestown Management, the plaza owners, we have outgrown the space we are currently in and have no additional room for expansion,” said Steve Davey, Goodwill’s president and CEO. “This property will provide the opportunity to expand our size, presence and services in the Huron community.”

The organization said plans are not confirmed, but they hope to break ground in the spring, complete construction and open the new retail facility sometime in the fall. 


Theater has successful annual fund campaign

MANSFIELD — Renaissance Performing Arts Association officials announced that they have met their 2017 annual fund campaign goal of $110,000. There were 135 donors who contributed to the success of the campaign.

Matching funds totaling $45,000 provided by The Richard and Arline Landers Foundation and Sharon Granter, in memory of Don Granter, challenged Renaissance supporters to successfully meet the aggressive campaign goal. Among the donations received as a part of the campaign included a $25,000 grant from The Sterkel Fund.

Funds generated from this campaign support the annual needs of the Renaissance Performing Arts, enabling the organization to open its doors to more than 40,000 local and regional community members annually, with 15,000 of them being area students. The Renaissance presents about 60 live performances each year, leads and conducts 12 distinct arts programs and partnerships, serves 40 area schools by providing lessons plans and in-school chamber ensemble performances, and is the venue for a variety of community events each year.


Soil and Water District remodeling 

The Huron County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) Board of Supervisors extended an apology in advance “for any inconvenience, while the Erie/Huron USDA Agricultural Service Center is being remodeled.”

The project of bathroom remodeling, painting and carpeting is slated to start today and last about eight weeks.

Here are the three phases of construction:

Phase I - bathrooms, SWCD & NRCS offices and the conference room. The NRCS staff will relocate to Erie County.

Phase II - the Farm Loan Team side.

Phase III - the FSA side.

The SWCD office hours and service to the public will remain unaffected as much as possible by relocating staff within the building.
