Sheriff's office: No sign of foul play

NEW LONDON — It was a sad ending for a New London couple, who were found dead at their home. Lisa Mutter, 58, and Rolf William Mutter, 67, were both found dead late last week at 2452 Ohio 162, New London, according to a sheriff's office report. The sheriff's office was called to do a welfare check after Rolf Mutter's mother, Gertrud Schnalcer, 85, of Rocky River, called and reported that she had not spoken to her son in about a month. Deputies first tried to contact the couple by phone, but were unable to reach them. After that, they tried to do the welfare check in person. When they arrived, they noticed a strong odor coming from the house, Huron County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy David Ditz said. Deputies had to borrow breathing apparatuses from the fire department in order to enter the home, Ditz said. Both bodies were found on a bedroom floor, he said. Deputies then contacted Huron County Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Harwood and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to help with the investigation, Ditz said. There is no sign of foul play, according to the sheriff's office, and both appeared to die of natural causes. Harwood could not be reached for comment on Monday.
