The Big Latch On is an annual worldwide event designed to give mothers support and to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.
This year’s event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at EHOVE Career Center and will be bigger and better than ever as Huron and Erie counties join forces for the global event’s 10th anniversary. This Big Latch On Extravaganza will have extra ways to celebrate, support and make new friends. Ten food-tasting stations will be set up featuring foods that promote good milk production.
It will also include recipes, children’s activities, door prizes, gift baskets and chair massages. Farmer’s market coupons will also be available, as well as face paintings and photos.
“It’s going to be a fun time with lots of support,” said one event organizer June Myers. “There are many breastfeeding moms in the area. It’ll be good to connect with others and on top of that, it’s breastfeeding awareness month.”
Myers said breastfeeding babies is an important part of a child’s development. Research shows that a mother’s milk helps baby and be healthier, and helps them bond, Myers said.
“It also saves (money and) resources,” she added.
The fact that the event takes place around the world has given many mothers the encouragement they need to continue to help their children be as healthy as possible. All participating mothers will have their children “latch on,” or will pump milk at the same time — 10:30 a.m. — in support of worldwide breastfeeding.
Nearly 60,000 people around the world took part in the Global Big Latch On last year, when more than 21,500 children “latched on.”
