Two-vehicle accident remains under investigation

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle head-on injury crash that occurred  at about 2:35 p.m. Thursday on Ohio 2 at milepost 24 (Ohio163, Port Clinton exit) in Portage Township.

Christopher S. Jacob, 26, of Fremont, was operating a 2012 Ford F-150 and was heading westbound on Ohio 2. Jacob sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was flown by ProMedica Air to ProMedica Hospital in Toledo. Jacob was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

Gary F. Wilhelm, 68, of Marblehead, was operating a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox and was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Ohio 2 for unknown reasons. Wilhelm also sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. Wilhelm was flown by St. Vincent’s LifeFlight to ProMedica Hospital. He was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation. The westbound lanes of Ohio 2 were closed for about two hours while the scene was investigated and both vehicles were recovered by Don’s Towing.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Danbury Police Department, Port Clinton Police Department, Port Clinton Fire/EMS Department, ProMedica Air, St. Vincent’s LifeFlight, and Don’s Body Shop.
