Big Red bows out of tourney with loss to SMCC

BASCOM — Hard work pays dividends in the postseason.

And while St. Mary Central Catholic may have struggled to get points at times in Tuesday’s Division IV sectional opener, the Panthers still battled on the boards, outrebounding Plymouth by a plus-43 margin en route to a 49-31 victory over the Big Red in the game played at Hopewell-Loudon.

With the win, the Panthers (13-10) move on to Saturday’s sectional final against Buckeye Central (18-4) back in Bascom.

The Big Red were led by Emily Blanton with 10 points and a 3-pointers while Chloe Mack added 8 with two 3-pointers. Tristen Wiley scored five and Maggie Branham, Shyan Gale Ariana Marx and Kelsey Blankenship added two a piece to round out the Big Red scoring.

Rachele Windau and Maggie London both tallied a double-double for the Panthers with matching stat lines of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kristen Wehner added six points and eight boards, Three other SMCC players had seven boards. Tre’Jeen McCarty chipped in four steals.

The Panthers led 6-3 after one quarter before blowing the game open with a 17-2 second quarter for a 23-5 advantage at halftime.

The Big Red ends their season with a 3-20 record.
