SANDUSKY — The Norwalk wrestling team had a strong showing at the Div. II Sandusky High School sectional over the weekend.

The Truckers advanced eight of their 13 wrestlers to this week’s Div. II district championship, which will be hosted at Norwalk High School. The top four placers at the sectional reached the district round.

Perkins won the sectional team title with 235.5 points, while host Sandusky was runners-up (217.5) and Norwalk was third (193).

“Overall, it was a pretty good day,” Norwalk coach Frank Staley said. “We brought 13 wrestlers and placed 11 total. We had some kids really fighting to keep their season alive. As a group, we were really engaged with the performances of one another.

“It was quite a great thing to see the older boys picking up the younger ones, and vice versa,” he added. “We are working toward becoming a great program.”

Norwalk had three individual champions, including Ethan Hernandez (46-3) at 160 pounds, Gabe Phillips (36-6) at 182 and Alec Maloney (42-5) at 220.

Hernandez pinned his way through the tournament in 2:49, 1:14, and in 1:59 in the finals over Huron’s JJ Holliday.

One week after losing to Perkins’ Tai Carter in the SBC championship finals, Gabe Phillips returned the favor with a 5-2 decision in the 182 final. He had pins in 50 seconds and 5:07 to advance to the title match.

Maloney, who opened with pins in 1:45 and 2:45, was looking to do the same after a loss to Perkins’ Sam McNulty in the SBC finals at 220. However, McNulty defaulted and Maloney got the walkover win.

Ethan Phillips (152) was second for Norwalk, losing a narrow 9-8 decision to Ontario’s Colton Turnbaugh. At heavyweight, Tche Leroux (34-7) suffered a similar fate. He lost a tough, 2-1 decision to Kyler Capizzi (Perkins) in the finals.

Corbin Ott (19-9) was third at 113, as was D.J. Smith (34-12) at 170. Ott won his third-place match with a pin in 1:50 over Colton Campbell (Clear Fork), while Smith needed 4:30 to pin Vermilion’s Chris Bennett.

Also moving on for the Truckers is Deyer Graffice (22-22) at 138. He was pinned by Galion’s Brenden Ganshorn in 3:11.

The top four at the district this weekend will advance to the state championships in Columbus. Action is slated to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday at Norwalk High School.
