Cohen Reer, a kindergartener at Norwalk Catholic Schools, won the Division I 50-pound state championship, held March 26 at Covelli Centre in Youngstown.
Reer, who also won the Oregon Clay district at the same weight in January, did not allow a point in his five wins en route to the state title. He had opened with two wins by pin in 31 seconds and 58 seconds, then won by scores of 9-0 and 12-0 in the quarters and semifinals to reach the title match — where he scored a pin in 1:02 to win the weight class.
His older cousin, Xander Gfell-King, placed third in the Div. II 58-pound weight class.
Gfell-King opened the tournament with three pins in 4:27, 30 seconds and 1:04 to reach the semifinals, where he lost to Monroeville’s Colt Clark.
Gfell-King — a third-grader at NCS — then placed third with a pair of wins (2-0, 10-2) in the consolation bracket. He also won the Thomas Worthington district championship at the same weight class in January.
Reer is the son of Zac and Lisa Reer, of Norwalk. Gfell-King is the son of Eric and Renee King, of Monroeville.
Both compete at the Burnett-Trained wrestling club in Milan.
