NL battles

LIMA — The New London wrestling team traveled to the Division III Thunderbird Invitational at Lima Central Catholic over the weekend.

A grand total of 39 teams competed and the Wildcats took 18th. Individuals placing for New London were Adonn Kruki taking fifth in the 195-pound division and Zach Bene took sixth in the 145 division. 

GIRLS’ HOOPS

Willard 51, Wynford 33

HOLMES TOWNSHIP — The Willard Lady Flashes picked up a big non-conference win over Wynford on Tuesday night.

The Flashes used a 22-8 first-quarter advantage to build a comfortable lead and let it ride the remainder of the contest picking up their 10th win of the season.

Leading the way for the Flashes was Ashlee Tuttle with 15 points including three 3-pointers. Sydney Stevens posted double-figures in teh scoring column with 10 points followed by Brooke Vipperman with six on a pair of 3’s, Cassidy Crawford with five and Madie Secor, Jolynn Brubaker, Alexis Moore and Addie Slone all with two points each. Crawford pulled down a team high six rebounds.

The Flashes improve to 10-9 and travel to Norwalk on Saturday.

Sandusky St. Mary’s 47, Monroeville 39

MONROEVILLE — The Monroeville Eagles dropped a tough non-conference contest at home on Tuesday night to Sandusky St. Mary’s.

The Lady Eagles were in it every step of the way trailing 9-7 an the end of the first, 24-18 at the half, 29-25 after the third and were outscored 16-14 in the fourth to take the loss.

Kara Schafer continued her impressive play dropping 15 points while Taylor Reer added eight, Lauren Gies and Amelia Dalton added five and Jordan Quillen and Ashlyn Tommas added three a piece.

Reer drained a pair of 3-pointers while Dalton and Tommas added one a piece.

The Lady Eagles fall to 4-13 on the season and host Mapleton on Saturday.

Ontario 58, South Central 31

GREENWICH — The South Central Trojans dropped a tough non-conference contest on Tuesday night falling to Ontario.

The Warriors jumped out to a quick 19-7 lead after the first and led 33-13 at the half. The Trojans won the fourth quarter 13-8.

Leading the way for South Central was Maddie Albert with nine points. Ally Burton and Sierra Hiltbrunner added four a piece, Bailey Mitchell, Kaycee Burton, Lily Antonio and Cheyenna Swander added three a piece while Holly Hale rounded out the scoring with two. Hale pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

The Trojans fall to 1-15 and host Plymouth on Saturday.

St. Paul, Crestview headed for showdown

OLIVESBURG — The Firelands Conference eighth grade girls’ hoops tournament reached the final round on Monday.

St. Paul increased their conference record to 15-1, by defeating a tough Western Reserve team (6-10), 30-26.

St. Paul was lead by Morgan Baxter and Danielle Smith both had 12 points.

Western Reserve had balanced scoring from Haylee Thomas and Ellie Blankenship with 8 Points.

Crestview increased their conference record to 15-1 by defeating a scrappy Mapleton team 37-27.

Autumn Bailey led the Cougars with 16 points, while Kenedi Goon added 11.

Mapleton was led by Cacie Stalnaker with 15 points.

Western Reserve and Mapleton will play for 3rd place in the Firelands Conference Wed. Feb 1st at Crestview at 5:00pm

The Firelands Conference Championship will come down to St. Paul and Crestview again, with the Cougars looking to repeat as Firelands Conference Champions The game will be at Crestview Middle School Gym Wednesday at 6:15pm
