In the seven-day forecast, highs most days will be in the upper 40s to mid 50s, while lows will be in the 30s. Widespread frost is expected tonight into Thursday morning.
The exception to the nightly 30s will be Friday, when the low will be in the mid 40s — making it a little warmer for high school football.
There is a chance of rain today, Friday, Saturday and Monday.
As for the leaves, the typical fall colors peak date in this area is about a week away, but most of the leaves are still green. That should begin to change this week.
A combination of factors has led to the arrival of those beautiful colors being about two weeks later than usual.
As nights grow longer and colder, the production of chlorophyll (green pigment in leaves) decreases until it stops. Without chlorophyll, the leaves take on the colors of the yellow and orange pigments, creating an array of beautiful fall foliage.
Prior to this week, however, the weather has been warmer and wetter than usual. Those warm, muggy nights greatly slowed the decrease of chlorophyll.
Now that colder nights have arrived, the change of colors will escalate, though colors might not be as vivid as usual.
The fall colors also might not last long, however.
Hard frosts would end the color-change process, resulting in leaves that turn brown and fall.
Also, early November typically brings storms that contain high winds — something that removes leaves from trees before the color changes are complete.
