Frigid weather returns

• Jan 13, 2018 at 6:00 AM

A winter storm hit the area Friday, causing difficult driving conditions and forcing all area schools to close.

That gives students a four-day weekend, since schools and government offices are closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday observance.

Some businesses and government offices closed early Friday in anticipation of freezing rain that was expected to plague the area that afternoon.

Then snow came.

But that wasn’t the only problem Friday. An ice jam along the Huron River at Franklin Flats in Milan caused water to start backing up to U.S. 250. That prompted a flood warning for Erie County.

Ice jams are unpredictable and can cause rapid rises and falls in river levels. As the river rises the jam could break up and move further downstream.

Now that the precipitation has stopped, for the most part, area residents have to deal with another problem — the return of frigid weather.

For today, Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, highs will be only in the teens and lows in the single-digits. The wind chill could make it feel like it’s several degrees below zero at times.

There is a good chance of more snowfall on Monday, when the high will be in the mid 20s and the low around 10. About an inch of accumulation is possible.

The high on Thursday could reach the low 20s. But that won’t be much relief from the bone-chilling cold that local residents will experience during the next several days.

Today, the sun will rise at 7:54:08 a.m. and set at 5:24:50 p.m.

On Sunday, the sun will rise at 7:53:44 a.m. and set at 5:25:57 p.m.

And on Monday, the sun will rise at 7:53:17 a.m. and set at 5:27:05 p.m.
