Sommers met the strict qualifications to compete at the 28th annual New Balance Outdoor Nationals, which starts today and runs through Sunday at North Carolina A&T University.
Coming off a sixth-place jump of 14-feet-10-inches — a career-best outdoors — in the Division I pole vault championships, Sommers will compete in the Emerging Elites division at nationals, which had a qualification height of 14-8. The boys championship qualification height is 15-7.
Sommers won the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake division championship in 2018 with a top jump of 14-6. He reached 14-8 at regionals, before his PR jump at state.
At the indoor state championships on March 3 in Geneva, Sommers cleared a personal-best 15-feet to place fourth at the meet.
