LANCASTER — St. Paul, Monroeville, New London and Western Reserve all had girls qualify for state based on Division III regional action at Lancaster Friday.

The Lady Flyers qualified three relays — 1600, 800 and 400.

The quartet of junior Kaleigh Stang and sophomores Gabby Scavuzzo, Olivia Powers and Meghan Hedrick won the 1600 at 4:04.07.

In the 800 relay, Scavuzzo, Hedrick, Hannah Mink and Powers finished third in the 800 relay at 1:47.79.

The 400 relay saw  junior  Mink, Hedrick, Scavuzzo and Powers place third at 51.33.

“This is a very special group,’’ St. Paul coach John Rossman said.”They believe in the process and have since Day 1.’’

Last season, the 1600 relay quartet finished fifth in the regional, just missing out on a state spot.

“They really used that experience,’’ Rossman said.”When you go down there, you try to get out. Our goal was to take first and we set our sights on it.’’

Monroeville’s Kristen Smith posted second in the 400 at 57.90.

New London’s Morgan Luedy qualified in the 100 and 200 and 100 and 300 hurdles.

Luedy won the 200 at 26.02, was third in the 100 hurdles 15.58 and fourth 300 hurdles 47.72 and 100 12.72.

“She actually broke the school record in the 100 hurdles,” Ladycat coach Misty Ebinger said. “The previous record was 16-second flat. She really ran a phenomenal race. Morgan mentioned that in the 300 hurdles, she went over every hurdle with the wrong leg, not her dominant one, so it wasn’t her smoothest race, but she wast tough enough to pull out with that fourth place finish.

“She trains all year long and I think that really showed tonight,” Ebinger added.

Meanwhile, Buckhannon notched second in the discus at 126-11. She won the shot put at 38-3 in the shot put.

The state tournament is Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
