Chargers sweep own invitational

By Norwalk Reflector Staff • Updated Apr 17, 2016 at 7:16 PM

MILAN — It’s been an exciting week at Edison High School with a groundbreaking ceremony for the school’s new fieldhouse.

The Chargers capped it off with a sweep at their own invitational Saturday.

Edison’s girls’ team scored 118.5 points to outdistance Huron at 86.

“Obviously excited to win the meet, it's always great when you can come out and perform on a beautiful day and win your own invite,” Edison girls coach Dean Shelley said. “When you can come out and put a good effort a week after there was a half-foot of snow on the ground, it's a good sign. We were able to find some girls today who were in the right spots and found some things we need to look at and address, but overall we have a pretty deep team.”

Norwalk finished fourth with 67 points, St. Paul fifth 58.50, Western Reserve seventh 47 and Monroeville ninth 41.

On the boys’ side, the Chargers tallied 137 points for the top spot. Vermilion notched 100.50 points for second.

“Pleasantly surprised,” Edison coach Tim Campana said. “I knew we would do OK, a lot of people set new PRs, so we got a lot of points where we weren't sure if we were going to get points.

“Weather makes a huge difference. After freezing for the last few weeks, we were hoping to get a nice day and we did,” he added. “The performances in track, it's always the warmer it is, the better you do.”

Western Reserve recorded 71 points for fourth, Norwalk 61 sixth, St. Paul ninth 16 and Monroeville 11th four.

Edison and Monroeville are at the Margaretta tri-meet Tuesday. Norwalk goes to Willard in Northern Ohio League also Tuesday.

Western is at the Port Clinton tri-meet Thursday.
