MILAN — The Edison High School Drama Club has been invited to perform “Don’t Drink the Water” at the Ohio Thespian State Conference.

This marks Edison’s eighth featured, full-length state performance. “Don’t Drink the Water” will be one of 12 such performances during the three-day conference at the Akron School of the Arts from March 29 through 31.

More than 1,500 students from across Ohio will gather to perform, see performances, attend workshops on a variety of performance and technical theater topics and participate in an individual event competition and tech challenge.

“The invitation means that immediately following ‘Big Fish,’ the drama club began preparations to take ‘Don’t’ Drink the Water’ on the road. The full set was taken from storage and re-assembled, rehearsals are in progress and the show will be performed for students from Edison Middle School in preparation for the state performance,” drama club director Rex Stanforth said.

“Big Fish” was the spring musical. Students performed it the weekend of March 8.

“In addition to rehearsing the show, students will also practice assembling and disassembling the set, since at conference each school is only guaranteed one hour to unload and assemble their set and one hour to strike and re-load the set, props and costumes following the performance,” Stanforth said.

“The opportunity to re-mount ‘Don’t Drink the Water’ more than four months after it was last performed and then to present the show to a new audience in an unfamiliar performance space provides the 25-member Edison delegation with a high stakes problem-solving experience that will be of value to them later in life.”

In addition to performing “Don’t Drink the Water,” two seniors will participate in the individual event competition. Allison Pennell will compete in costume construction and Megan Morley will participate in stage management.

Pennell and Morley each earned a double superior rating, which qualified them to participate in the National Individual Events showcase in Lincoln, Neb. in June.
