MANSFIELD — The Renaissance Education Department is offering an “Improv Underground” program, a free theater improvisation course.

Improv Underground classes focus on building basic improv skills through group activities and are open to all students between the ages of 14 and 19.

Students are guaranteed to gain self-confidence, improve communication skills and have fun, according to organizers of the course.

All classes take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield. The course begins on Feb. 7 and will run through April 4. An “open mic” style performance, featuring class participants, will be held on the evening of April 5. The course is led by Dauphne Maloney, well-known throughout the area for her work with youth theatre, with help from Renaissance Artistic Director Michael Thomas, a former Second City improv troupe member.

Interested participants can register online at or by emailing [email protected] For more information on this program or other Renaissance Education programs, contact the Education Department at 419-522-2726, ext. 212 or visit
