The Norwalk boys’ tennis team blanked Sandusky 5-0 and secured the Northern Ohio League crown outright Thursday.
"With this victory, the Truckers have claimed the outright NOL championship for the 26th time in program history and the 25th time in the last 32 years,’’ coach Chris Higgins said “After finishing in second place to Shelby last year, we knew we would have some close matches in the league.
”Many of our matches have been 3-2 victories against the leagues top teams,’’ the coach added.
On Thursday, Andrew Herner, Joey Thomas and Evan Hohman won at singles and Jacob Deiderick and Jacob Coe and Damon Mohan and Austin Brown did the same in doubles competition.
“Without the improvement of Andrew Herner as our No. 1 singles player, this title would not be possible,’’ Higgins said. ”Joey and Evan have filled in at various spots and have played well overall. The development of our doubles teams has been critical. Jacob and Jacob were joined by Damon and Austin this year. They stepped right into second doubles and we have been incredibly solid at that spot this season.’’
The Truckers, 18-0, 11-0, look to finish league play unbeaten at Tiffin Columbian today.
