NORWALK — Both the St. Paul boys and Norwalk girls had strong showing at Thursday morning’s Norwalk Classic at the Norwalk Recreation Aquatic Center.

Along with visiting Sandusky — a strong SBC program — the St. Paul boys finished with 104 points behind the Blue Streaks (114), while the Truckers scored 82 points.

On the girls side, Sandusky scored 149 points to Norwalk’s 128, while St. Paul scored 28 points.

“This was a fun meet over the holiday break for the kids,” St. Paul coach Stacy Stoll said. “We have a few more of these different meets coming up, so the kids get to try different events.

Norwalk coach Erin Smetzer agreed.

“Today was a fun meet for the kids with it being during the break,” she said. “The swimmers all swam well and had a lot of fun. They especially love the co-ed, 10-person relay we did at the end.”

For the Flyer boys, the 200 medley relay of Jarret Schaffer, Ryan Hedrick, Andrew Schaffer and Gavin Moffit took first in 1:57.50.

Jarrett Schaffer also won the 50 breaststroke in 29.89 seconds, while Moffit won the 50 freestyle in 26.03 seconds.

Leading the Norwalk girls on Thursday was Anna Little. She won the 50 and 100 freestyle races in 27.56 and 58.92 seconds. Also for Norwalk, Mara Berry won the 50 backstroke in 33.03.

“Anna is having a great year,” Smetzer said. “All of the seniors are swimming really well for the first half of the year.”

For the Norwalk boys, Ethan Schmenk took first in the 50 butterfly (28.91).

Among the second-place finishers for the Norwalk girls include Sela Bery in the 50 (27.93), 100 (1:01.21) and 200 free (2:13.82). Carissa Link was second in the 100 IM (1:10.39) and the 50 breaststroke (37.96), while Mara Berry was runners-up in the 50 butterfly (31.76).

Two Norwalk relays in the girls races were also second. The 200 medley of Mara Berry, Carissa Link, Megan and Sela Berry swam in 2:12.06, while the 400 medley team of Callie Link, Carissa Link, Mara Berry and Little took second in 4:55.48.

Placing second for the Truckers in boys’ events included the 200 medley relay team of Micah Duncan, Nick Smith, Schmenk and Chaz Smith (2:04.05). Chaz Smith was also second in the 50 free (26.07).

For the St. Paul boys, the 400 medley relay of Hedrick, Andrew Schaffer, Bryce Wnek and Michael Howerton were also second in 4:59.53. Wnek was second in the 100 free (1:00.71) and Jarret Schaffer was second in the 200 free (1:58.50), while Andrew Schaffer took second in the 100 IM (1:05.63).

For the Flyer girls, Maggie Centa was second in the 50 backstroke (36.26).

“Sometimes when they have these shorter distance races, the kids get over the fear of the longer races and their abilities,” Stoll said.

St. Paul is back in action on Jan. 2 at Sandusky High School against St. Mary Central Catholic, and then on Jan. 5 at Mansfield for the Tyger Relays. Norwalk is off until Jan. 5 at the Sandusky A-Behr Invitational.

“We are looking forward to working hard in January and finishing the season strong,” Smetzer said.
