Norwalk falls to Pirates in SBC Lake opener

NORWALK — The Norwalk softball team allowed four runs in each of the first two innings in Friday’s Sandusky Bay Conference Lake division opener against visiting Perkins at Norwalk High School.

For the Truckers (0-4, 0-1), Karissa Konrad was 2 for 2, while Leah Malson had a double and an RBI. Sydney Hughes, Kylee Edney and Alyshia Leimeister added singles for Norwalk.

Norwalk is scheduled to play next at Shelby on Wednesday.

 

Monroeville 7, Tiffin Calvert 0

MONROEVILLE — Carley Helmstetter and Payton Scheid combined to throw a one-hit shutout Friday as the Eagles routed the visiting Senecas in a non-league battle.

Helmstetter, who went the first five innings, struck out 10 and allowed a single walk. Scheid struck out five in the final two innings, allowing only a one-out single in the sixth.

Ashlyn Tommas and Alex Carper both had two hits each for Monroeville (4-0), which got RBIs from Carper, Tommas, Casey Crossan, Brooke Time and Morganne Stanley.

 

BASEBALL

St. Paul 14, Danbury 3 (5 innings)

At Danbury Twp., the Flyers dropped a 10-spot on the Lakers in the second inning, allowing them to quickly build a large advantage they used to win in five innings.

Zak Reed earned the win on the mound and led St. Paul (5-1) at the plate, registering three hits, including a double. On the hill, he gave up a single earned run on three hits, striking out eight and walking one.

Lars Livengood, Noah Good and Jake Griffin all had two hits each for the Flyers. Gavin Starcher added a double.

For Danbury, Saylor Evans had two hits, including a double.

 

Galion 19, Plymouth 5 (5 innings)

GALION — The Big Red dropped to 1-4 overall following Friday’s non-league loss to the host Tigers.

For Plymouth, Walker Elliot was 1 for 2 with an RBI, while Avery Horne had a double and an RBI. Anthony Montgomery also drove in a run, while Seth Bailey, Treven Lane, Jarrett Miller and Marcus Adams added hits.

 

S. Central 5, Lucas 2

GREENWICH — The Trojans rallied with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning in Friday’s non-conference win over the Cubs.

For South Central, Simon Blair had three hits and an RBI, while Philip Madison had two hits and an RBI. Fredericks added two hits.

On the mound, Ben Lamoreaux allowed two unearned runs over five innings of work. He struck out 11 with three walks, scattering five hits.

 

TENNIS

Ashland 4, Norwalk 1

NORWALK — Ashland defeated the Truckers in non-conference action Friday.

Norwalk’s (3-2) lone win came at second doubles, as the duo of Eric Hull and Jordan Cotterill bested Will Long and Andrew Furness in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (7).

The Arrows swept singles play, as Nolan Glazier defeated Andrew Riley at No. 1 (6-0, 6-0), Tommy Glazier beat Ben Traczek at No. 2 (6-1, 6-1) and Jack Schultz bested Jack Mei at No. 3 (6-4, 7-5).

Ashland’s team of Luke Blackley and Justin Seamour defeated Austin Brown and Wyatt Brown at first doubles, 6-1, 7-6 (4).

Norwalk hosts Perkins on Monday.

Bellevue 5, Upper Sandusky 0

BELLEVUE — The Redmen swept Upper Sandusky Friday in non-conference action.

Bellevue improves to 3-1 with the win.

In singles action, Logan Miller defeated Clay Burger at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0), while Nate Fox beat Levi Malone at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2) and Justin Baxter topped Justin Blackburn at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1).

In doubles play, Richie Stombaugh and Zach Fischer topped Keegan Hossler and Sam Stuckman at No. 1 (7-5, 6-4), while Gunnar Lilly and Zach Eskins defeated Grant Bower and Landon Cotto-Ramos at No. 2 (7-5, 6-4).
